Job Summary
Supervise dental students in educational activities at WesternU College of Dental Medicine according to standards of the College of Dental Medicine (CDM) with a primary role if CDM pre-clinical education.
Individuals must possess these skills, abilities and knowledge or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Recognized knowledge and experience in a broad range of general dentistry diagnostic and treatment services.
- Ability to communicate effectively to individuals and groups, both in writing and orally.
- Ability to interact in an effective and positive manner with individuals of diverse backgrounds, including administration, faculty, residents and/or students, staff, patients, and outside contacts.
- Ability to effectively conduct detail-oriented assignments and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple responsibilities in an academic environment
Required Qualifications
- Education: Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or equivalent.
- Licensure: Active California dental license or be qualified to obtain licensure or faculty special permit in California.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience: - Minimum 3 years of clinical practice experience.
- Experience in supervising students and/or residents in a preclinical and/or clinical academic setting.
 
Essential Job Duties
Teaching:
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, assist, and teach students in diagnosis, treatment planning, and performance of all phases of general dentistry including digital dentistry, removable prosthodontics, endodontics, surgical extractions, and treatment of medically complex patients, primarily in a preclinical environment.
- Provide instruction and supervise oral health care in a peer-to-peer clinical setting.
- Serve as a role model and mentor for students, providing feedback on individual performance and resources for improvement as appropriate.
- Mentor assigned dental students, primarily from the D1 and D2 year classes, through role modeling professionalism, advising, teaching, facilitating group discussion, and providing assessment in the preclinical program.
- Maintain calibration with and set an example for students by following CDM clinical and administrative protocols and procedures.
- Assist with the implementation of an efficient, educational program by creating simulation assignments and learning activities in area of expertise or interest, that supports the educational mission and financial objectives of the College.
- Maintain intellectual integrity and strive for academic excellence.

Scholarship:
Key Responsibilities
- Participate as appropriate and as time permits in research projects, studies and surveys which are conducted in accord with University and College research plans and objectives.

- Participate in service to the profession and/or community service activities as assigned.
Clinical/Professional Practice:
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain proficiency in the use of electronic health records.
- Participate in the credentialing / privileging process.
- Oversee patient care at CDM clinical sites as required.

Expected Pay Scale

Pay Transparency Act- Western University of Health Sciences is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range considers various factors in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The Expected Pay Scale is defined as the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Placement within the Expected Pay Scale is determined by internal equity and relevant qualifications.
